Establishing Sony Global Relief Fund in response to the novel coronavirus
As announced today, we have established the "Sony Global Relief Fund for COVID-19," a 100 Million US dollar fund in support of those engaged in frontline medical and first responder efforts to fight COVID-19, and to assist the many people that have been impacted by the spread of the virus.
To date, we have engaged in a range of initiatives around the world and across the Sony Group to support those affected by the spread of COVID-19. These have included donations to help response activities in China, the US and other countries, the provision of educational tools such as our KOOV robotic and coding kit and MESH programming tool to assist children affected by school closures, free broadcasts of entertainment content for children, as well as free access to live online performances by Sony Music affiliated artists.
In addition to these activities, this fund will be used help overcome the unprecedented challenges we now face on a global scale, by providing further assistance in the medical field to fight the virus, support for the education of children who are the bearers of our future, and support for members of the creative community in the entertainment industry, which has been greatly impacted by the spread of the virus. I have already begun discussions with the heads of each of our businesses to determine specific details of these measures. And while the fund will first be used in these three areas, going forward we intend to extend its scope further.
As announced on March 27, our operations have also been affected globally, and will take some time to recover. I would like to once again express my deep gratitude for your tireless efforts to mitigate the impact on our business and maintain day-to-day operations, even in the face of such extraordinary challenges.
At the same time, as a global company I believe we have an important responsibility to society, and that is why we have taken the decision to establish this Global Relief Fund. I hope that through this fund we can support those on the frontlines of the battle against COVID-19, and that as a "creative entertainment company with a solid foundation of technology," we can help restore peace of mind, and once again contribute to filling the world with emotion.
